Ducted Heating - How It Works

A ducted heating system has 4 main components, which consist of a Furnace, Ducting, Registers and the Return Air Grille.

The Furnace is usually installed in a home roof, office, or outside of it, but sometimes placed under flooring or in a small space. The air is drawn in by fan and then passes over a heat exchanger, therefore warming the air up. The furnace is fuelled by natural gas or LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas).

Ducting ensures the heated air is distributed throughout the home. The ducts are usually laid under the floor or in the roof.

Registers (also known as outlets or vents) are small openings attached to the roof or floor, which direct the heated air into the houses rooms. Typically these Registers are placed near the outside walls of the home on the floor to allow the heat to flow through the house to return to the air grille as easily as possible. Ceiling registers are also placed in homes and are usually centred on the roof in each room.

The final step in the Ducted heating system is the Return Air Grille. This takes the heated air and puts it back to the furnace, which begins the cycle again. To reduce dust circulation, filters can be put in place on the return air grille, but if the filter is added, the grille must be larger than usual.
